How much are used tires worth? *UPDATE*

I want to replace my OEM summer tires (because reasons—they suck). I was hoping to sell them to soften the blow a bit. What would I be able to get out of them? Is it worth bothering?

Tires are Goodyear ST’s, 235/75R16, 106S, have up to (not sure, because I don t know if the previous owner used snow tires) 68000KM (not miles) on them.

*UPDATE* The tires are 12/32 tread brand new. However they don’t seem to have worn evenly. One tire has an even depth of 6.5/32, all the others have 7/32 on one side, 6/32 in the middle, and 5/32 on the other side... I’m guessing that makes them pretty much worthless. Not to mention the tirerack reviews are pretty awful. The ratings are even worse.

I don’t have any experience pricing used tires, but if it were me, I’d look up the as-new price and work from there. If unsure of mileage, use (original spec vs actual wear) tread depth to “pro-rate” it. If tires are half-worn, try to sell them at half of new price.

Add additional discounts if there is any dry rot or curb rash. Bigger discounts if tires show uneven treadwear.

measure the tread depth.

then post on local wheel/tire FB market place. someone may bite. just list as OBO

The OBO part may be a good idea... My ukulele broke a few months ago, and by pitting the offers against each other I eventually got 70$. Or about half what I paid for it brand new.

I usually pay between $100-200 for used tires with decent tread (without wheels) on Craigslist. I’d pay more if they were sticky performance tires, but usually those are pretty worn out. Remember that the buyer has to decide whether the increased frequency of dismounting/remounting used tires is worth it overall.

A lot of times used tires aren’t worth it because of uneven wear, old manufacture dates, improper storage, etc so be clear on the specifics of those.

That sucks, did you monitor your tire pressures? I feel like that could have contributed to that kind of wear. I think if it was a suspension issue you wouldn’t have any even tires.

From experience its hard to move used tires even if they’re plenty good..

I found out something disturbing over the weekend that would lead me to believe that it was my fault they wore badly, but it’s the wrong kind of wear.

Basically, last year, before I put any thought into tire wear, I added pressure to about 5-7psi over spec. Now this was OK last winter, as I did this before it got below freezing and it was quite a cold winter (effectively dropping my tire pressures to factory specs). This winter I did the same thing, as soon as I had the tires switched I pumped them up. I’ve just noticed my front tires have worn in the center about 2mm more than the edges. I’m going to baby them and swap them to the back for one more winter, but that’s another story. What I figure happened was, I pumped them up expecting the same results, and instead the temperature never dropped, so the pressure stayed up.

That also seems to partly explain why it drives nicer in the cold. (Now ironic title) I still think it’s partly down to shocks though, so I’m replacing them anyway. I’ve ordered new ones, but maybe I’ll wait a little while to install them now...

Anyway, I did the same with my summers, so I’d have expected the centers to be worn down more, instead of which they’ve worn this way... I have no idea

Yea, and most people are completely clueless about tires.

If it was me looking for tires of that size, factoring in the condition and how they’re poorly rated cheap tires, I would only buy them if they were around 10-20% of they cost new or less. I would pay $50-$60 for all 4 of them. I definitely wouldn’t pay $100 or more.

Maybe someone else might pay more, but I wouldn’t.

Merde.

Well, I hate these ones, so I guess it’s bite the bullet on the new ones then.

Fortunately I do have a local guy who buys and sells used tires, but I figured I’d get more out of them selling them myself.

Tbh, neither would I, but I have no issues with hosing a sucker. Anyway, $60 is better than nothing. I just have too much Scottish blood to throw away something with wear left on it.

I’m either going to take them to a local used tire dealer and get maybe $30-40 out of them or run them for a little bit this spring punctuated by large smoke shows. I’ve got a road trip planned for the summer and I really don’t want to take them.

It’s okay to be a few PSI above the car manufacturer’s tire pressure specs, but you NEVER want to exceed the tire pressure max listed on the tire itself.

Just put them to factory cold specs, use a digital gauge from Amazon for like $10 to check them periodically if your car isn’t able to report on it individually. Same thing in the summer don’t just pump them up make sure everything is specific. I just put air in all my tires yesterday because of the lower pressure from lower temps. Everything is 1-2 PSI over factory for winter and summer because at factory my car is has more understeer.

About as much as the other used rubber - a used condom.

Max pressure is 44 on the summers, not sure on the snows (Blizzaks) but seeing as they are a 109T and the OEMs are a 106S I would imagine they are at least the same. I don’t thing I put more than 40psi in the summers.

I have TPMS, but it only reports low pressure.

I would have to play around with the pressures to figure out the best handling, but I just set them WAY too high this time.

Frankly these tires are worth about as much as a used condom brand new, but there are people who will buy them and sell them. I was just wondering if I could get more selling them myself.

I haven’t run into this issue with my cars, as so far I haven’t owned one long enough to wear out a set of tires, but I do tend to swap out motorcycle tires while there’s still some useful life left on them. I doubt I could sell them, though. I usually either pay a shop to dispose of them if they’re completely wrecked, or give them away for free on Craigslist.

I know a shop that’ll probably pay for them, but I don’t know much and I was hoping to get more out of them selling them myself.
